Bharti Airtel, Vodafone and Idea have been major shareholders in the Indian telecom market till 2016. With the entry of Reliance Jio in December 2016 and its affordable plans, it didn’t take much time for it to become the biggest market player in a span of four years.
Simultaneously, the number of operators have almost halved since over these 9 years, from 15 in 2011 to 8 in 2019.
After the entry of Jio, the telecom market saw a lot of mergers, one of the major ones being the merger of Vodafone India with Idea Cellular. Ultimately, it ended up becoming essentially a four-player market in 2019 with Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea being the biggest players along with government players MTNL & BSNL.
